Timeline

1975
‘Kiritsugu Takijima’ and ‘Sato Tetsuya’ are raised in the same household under a US-based group of Japanese immigrants while sharing the same family name that took pity on the latter and adopted him from an orphanage. Notably, the first feels a sense of emptiness as he grows up. A lack of not knowing what he wished to do with his life that persists into adulthood. The only constant is their shared interest in martial arts. They said they’d face the future together. The latter, instead, is driven by a desire to induce change amongst the populace by physical methods as opposed to politics.
1990
The Gulf War begins.
1994-2002
Kiritsugu and Sato join the U.S. military out of both tradition and wanting to do something with their lives. They feel that the organization can give them that, for better or worse. Steadily, while watching the others’ back, they gradually climb up the ranks. The two are in search of their own vision of a personal utopia…

2001
Coordinated terrorist attacks are carried out against America.
Coalition forces invade Afghanistan.
Briefly, Kiritsugu becomes despondent over his ‘home’ having strikes conducted against it. It is during his off-deployment period that he meets his first wife, a sickly woman named Maria he sees as someone he must ‘fix’ as opposed to overlooking her as another might do - sparking his compassion. The two have their first child, Hiroyuki Takijima.

2002

Kiritsugu and Sato complete their initial 8-year enlistment, being discharged.

2003

The Iraq War begins.
2005-2012

Senji Takijima is born, at the cost of his mother passing away due to a heart arrhythmia and her ill body struggling to handle the strain.

Kiritsugu takes this especially hard, taking to the drink to cope over not being able to ‘fix’ what had occurred and the household being reduced to a single parent. It instills in him a vicious greed, to make sure it can never happen again and becoming disillusioned with the cause of the army. A moral dilemma that he never received an answer to no matter how much he asked towards the clouds, over how a ‘wretched sinner like him’ could be given someone so perfect, so beautiful to care for and do his best–and then she dies—and he lives on. Pondering over his being saved and how she was not and how he was expected to believe in judgement.

Sato, seeing an opportunity, establishes them as freelancing bodyguards in their ethnic ‘home’ of Japan. Eventually, they find themselves roped into the very bottom of a ladder of a clan by the name of Sanada. The two believe it is the only way to make real change, Kiritsugu less so as he gets older. If they spill enough blood, then maybe they could change the way the overlooked and the downtrodden think. In their spiral, they do whatever they are told for the sake of raising Hiroyuki and Senji, who are young and ignorant.

During this span of time at one of his guarding assignments within the fertile grasslands of England, Kiritsugu catches the spark for an illustrious relative by the name of Iris of the Primol company, owned by the illustrious parents of Gwendolyn Dupont Bettencourt. He hides the skeletons in his closet, past or present, under the guise of ‘deployments’, similar to when he served. He obscures his face, wears gloves, avoids murdering law enforcement (as he was of the opinion that the law would care less about gang members being killed than their own forces and not purse them as hard), the whole nine yards.

2013

Kiritsugu’s attempts at shortcutting the ‘rat race’ come to a head when his ‘clan’ explodes into carnage before the Yakuza princess, as Koyuki Sanada is called, comes into power.

“There were rules for everything.

Even murder. Especially murder. A blade wielded without a creed, after all, was little more than aimless violence, and the assassins hiding behind the façade of the Kaitei-Gumi affiliated Yakuza clan called Clan Sanada were very much aimed violence. They were Hitokiri in a modern age of seeming peace, blademasters who dominated the competition in an era of guns, and the ever-creeping shadow behind some of the most brutal liquidations in the Asia-Pacific region. Politicians, high-powered executives, business moguls, assorted personages of great importance, even entire companies - all valid prey. All put to the sword for the right price.”

Facing down Oni-masked (‘fearsome and vicious, meant to send forth a message of terror’, allegedly) assailants in the dead of night, Sato and Kiritsugu come out alive—while Senji loses three years of his life in a trauma-induced coma.

2016-2020

Senji awakens, and must spend the next few years playing catch up to recover what he lost despite being provided physical and electric stimulation to lessen muscle atrophy. Kiritsugu suffers an ego death, and is presumed dead or crippled and a relic of the past as Koyuki Sanada comes to power. Out of fear of losing his marriage and being outnumbered, he washes his hands of the clan and does not seek vengeance. He begins feeling his age.
