22:03 Valenzuela:

The boxing club has arranged an official amateur match between me, Carlotta Valenzuela (32 years old), a featherweight at 125 lbs, and Di Perry (20 years old), welterweight at 150 lbs. Di is new to the boxing club, and I know very little about her background. Her weight does not concern me, but her greater reach at 5 ft 9 in tall vs my 5 ft 3 in, means I will be fighting in close. Tonight I’ll be wearing red headgear, a black sports bra, some red 10 oz gloves, short boxing trunks, a groin protector, some boxing shoes, and of course a mouth guard. I don’t know what to expect from this chica, so I’ve come prepared. Be a bout of three rounds, two minutes per round with a referee and judges. I’m now ready to enter the ring as they call my name up.

22:20 AmateurGirlie: Wow, today's the day. My first boxing bout. So soon after I even picked up MMA. I should have never told my coach how much I enjoyed the boxing training and sparring... Now here I am, volunteered to take on someone who seems like a veteran, 'for the experience'. I have height and weight on my side at least, and it's not my first time taking on a more experienced opponent. In my MMA debut (and so far only fight) my opponent had three fights under her belt. That didn't stop me from pummelling her in the head and submitting her in just 33 seconds of round one.
22:26 AmateurGirlie: I bounce nervously on my toes. I'm wearing the same attire from my MMA match: black sports bra and yellow muay thai style trunks. The black 10oz boxing gloves are much heavier than the MMA ones I'm used to. That's not the only new thing. Instead of sleek black shin and instep padding I'm wearing my pink trainers, I'm so new to boxing I don't even have my own boxing boots yet. I paw at my crotch with my gloves, unable to do much about the uncomfortable new sensation of having a groin protector on. But the intimate protector does help me feel at least a little ready for this, as does the solid black headguard which has been strapped on tightly. Lastly, and most importantly, my trust black gumshield is in place. The thick rubber guard pokes out from my lips and I try to make it look like a smile as I prepare to be called into the ring.

22:27 Valenzuela: Just before the fight begins, I hear things about Di, her first MMA fight went well and she submitted a somewhat more experienced fighter in under 33 seconds of the first round. Impressive, but not earth shattering, and I feel confident I can handle her. And now the ref calls us to the ring centre, and says “Alright fighters, you’ve both received the rules in the dressing room, but I’ll remind you now: Protect yourselves at all times. Obey my commands at all times. When I say break, I want a clean break; no hitting on the break. Keep your punches up; no shots below the belt. No holding, no hitting behind the head, and absolutely no punching after the bell. If one of you goes down, go to the neutral corner and stay there until I call you back. Touch gloves if you want to — and come out fighting when the bell rings.” I offer my gloves, along with a smirk, and return to my corner to wait for the bell.
22:43 AmateurGirlie: Hearing the referee explain the rules brings the whole thing home to me. I'm nervous, seriously nervous. I stress about how I'm going to 'protect myself at all times' against a fighter like you. But I must so I will. The referee gives out one detail I hope I won't need: 'if one of you goes down or takes a count three times in one round then the fight ends there - with a TKO for your opponent'. Oddly I was also comforted by his: 'this is a low level event and one of you is on debut, so I'll step in quickly with a standing-eight count if I feel one of you needs it'. I tap out my gloves and push them hard, trying to intimidate you. I can see your smirking lips and the transparent-blue mouthguard underneath, so I guess that didn't work. Back in my corner I raise my guard and await the bell. DING
22:48 Valenzuela: I raise my gloves and form an orthodox stance, left glove and foot leading, right glove held back near my chin, elbows tucked in. DING! The bell rings and I shuffle out quick to the ring centre and begin to bob side to side, looking for openings and step off to my right. Rather than trying to circle, I suddenly step back left, trying to create confusion with motion, and snap a jab out towards your chin, wanting to pop you but at least distract you as I swing a right hook out for your lower floating ribs, and then a nice left hook out towards your jaw, trying to swing it over your right shoulder.....I keep bouncing lightly on my feet as I engage you. (R1 1:50)
22:57 AmateurGirlie: As a new boxer I'm still quite wooden, but that means I follow drills and my coach's advice to the letter. I remember what she said to me and step out quickly and boldly, trying to take up as much ring space as possible and make best use of my size advantage. My guard, with tucked elbows and gloves tight together in front of my mouth is simple but effective. You jab from too far out after your step back and I continue towards you. I step to my right to allude your low right hook but in doing so I step right into the left hook you had sailing towards my jaw. I see it in time and drop my head. It is powerful but lands next to my ear on the headguard padding. I'm hit but not stunned, this isn't my first fight. I continue my march forwards, lashing out combinations to take advantage of your guard slightly opened by consecutive hooks. 1-2-1-2 goes out, jabs and straights as I try to land my first blow of the fight. I then aim a low left hook of my own, hoping my combinations have taken your guard upstairs.
23:05 Valenzuela: I tried to get aggressive early on, because you looked so nervous, but my attack does little, as my jab falls short, my right hook also falls sort as you move off to your right, and my left hook hits the padding on your head gear. And then you come after me rather quickly with a fast flurry of jabs and straights, feel your power as I use my big 10 oz gloves to block the strikes, but they knock my gloves back face as I move into a peek-a-boo guard. Momentarily blinded, your low left hook swings in under my right elbow and POUNDs into my ribs….making me realise what I big gal you are. I breath in as my mouth opens in a big O shape. But I refuse to back down and stay in striking range, trying to fire back a right hook towards your jaw, trying to go over your left shoulder before you can guard up, and then shift my weight to my left to send a left uppercut towards your navel, trying to go under your elbows, twisting my core to increase the power. (R1 1:30)
23:22 AmateurGirlie: I'm relieved to see the big impact my low hook made against your side, I'm on the scoresheet. Plus, some of the force in my jab-cross punches will have made its way through your gloves. You are still partially bent over from my strike so the right hook is lower than textbook, meaning it glances off my upper left arm. It stings but does little damage. I learn the lesson about fighting you on the inside and instinctively step back, feeling the wind as your uppercut flies just ahead of my nose. I want to get a blow in before your left glove can return to guard. Aiming for your headguard-framed face I fire off a stiff jab and then a hard cross as soon my left glove is back. (R1 1:20)
23:31 Valenzuela: Another big factor in this fight is speed, and the speed that youth has over an older fighter, but we shall see how this might play out. My right hook only glances off your upper arm, a factor related to my lower height, and then you step back from my uppercut, which only strikes some empty airspace. The step back means you wanna use your reach advantage in addition to avoiding my upper, and as my guard begins to return, a stiff jab comes out, hammering my mouth and snapping my head back, ugggg…..I hate taking a jab in the face! Especially as your big glove compresses over my face...As you bring your left back to guard, you strike out with a cross, but I’m ready and weave under it, and step forward into you, swing a left uppercut towards your chin, and then a right hook at your floating ribs, and then a left hook towards your liver, not wanting to back down, not yet (R1 1:10).
23:48 AmateurGirlie: YES! Another solid punch landed, this time to your open face. Your head flies back and I'm still internally celebrating as my cross misses your weaving head. Before I can understand what's happening you have closed the gap again and I'm in the same position as before. This time you make no mistake with your uppercut and my teeth slam together - thank goodness for that thick black mouthguard. I stumble backwards but keep my feet just about. Luckily I've stepped back out of the range of your hooks and have time to gather myself. I need to cut your freedom to move and pick my punches. I lay down a good rate of punches, jabs and crosses and I try to shepherd you into a corner, keeping you from closing the gap. With your guard up and ready for more straight punches, I change it up. I smash into your guard hard with a strong jab, before attempting to loop around the guard with a long overhand right, staying as far back as I can. (R1 1:00).
23:57 Valenzuela: There is nothing like an uppercut to the chin to rattle your opponent. It drives you back and then both of my hooks towards your body miss completely, making me look like I’m shadow boxing. You stay on your feet though, and keep your stance and come back at me with a flurry of straight punches that pound my guard hard, driving me back into a corner, you clearly using your greater body mass to bully me. Then a strong jab smashes into my guard, driving my gloves apart, just long enough for a long overhand right to come in and smash into the padding of my headgear above my forehead, knocking my head back, and even after only hitting my padding, it makes me feel a little loopy. You are using your reach to advantage and I gotta stop this, and I gotta box my way out of the corner, so I come forward with my own flurry of straights 1-2-1-2 towrds your face….trying to bully you backwards so I can slip around to my right . (R1 0:50)
00:06 AmateurGirlie: My punch smashes into the forehead padding of the headguard but I see your eyes bulge and sense that a lot of the impact transferred. I'm still a long way out when your jab combinations fly out, so am not too affected. I see you trying to outflank me on my left, and throw a couple of long left hooks. These are either to make an impact or to punch your guard back where it started. Years of playing rugby are coming in useful as I'm not blowing too hard as the round ticks on. Still keeping at range, I batter your guard as it tries to approach, using my strength advantage. Hopefully one of these jabs or crosses is going to land? I mix in a low left hook too, not wanting you to get used to my style. (R1 00:40)
00:14 Valenzuela: My straights land short or only lightly tap into your guard, and then my attempt to out flank you fails, as you clip my gear with a nasty left hook that rattles my skull, and even though the impact is secondary, it still makes my head pop and my neck twist, again size to deliver intimidating blows. I’m driven back into the corner, and my guard gets battered by a flurry of jabs, but I keep my guard high and absorb these, protecting my head. Each jab drives my gloves back towards my face, so I don’t see the low left hook, that pounds into my side….ugggg…..I give out a gasp, and react quick, stepping towards you to throw out a long right straight towards the centre of your face, and then a left hook at your jaw, as I struggle to move you back to get out of this fucking corner! (R1 00:30)
00:28 AmateurGirlie: You are taking some nasty impacts through your guard and headgear from my punches and bend low from the impact of my low left. I'm focused on you when the punch lands so react fast to your advance, pulling my left straight back into guard. My returning left bats away your straight right, but your left hook to the jaw slides between my not quite in-guard gloves and smacks me hard on the jaw. My head turns fully with the punch, but I step forward. I can see how much you want to not be in the corner, telling me how important it is to keep you there. I clinch up with you, smothering your guard. Using my long arms I try to tie you up and aim to land short hard punches to the side of your head and body, all the while pushing you backwards again. (R1 00:20)
00:33 Valenzuela: I have a sinking feeling in my gut that this newbie chica has a better fight IQ than what I thought she would have, a feeling in my gut that I don’t like, that she is controlling this round, but I can adapt to this and will zero in weaknesses real soon…..for example, she did not like getting her chin fucked up by my uppercut. I just need to get in close….these thoughts are flashing through my mind as my right straight flashes out and my big 10 oz glove get block, but then my left hook smacks into your jaw….but I can’t follow up as you lunge forward, slamming your sweaty body into my sweaty body, clinching me up and forcing me to bear your weight….I begin to twist left and right as I breath hard, grunting as you land some short punches to my side and the side of my headgear….the ref watches intently but does not yet order a break….”box it out gals!”…you keep pushing forward until my back hits the padded turnbuckle…(R1 00:10)
00:47 AmateurGirlie: 'Umph' I exhale as I shove you rearwards, and come up against the padded corner. I try and hold your right arm down as I attack your side, and try to push your left arm up and away from me as I aim for the side of your head. After a couple of seconds I step back, shoving you off me and leaving you against the corner post. I want something eye catching to end the round and impress the judges. I hope you're too confused to do much it as I bend low to throw a left jab into your belly, just above the waistband. I come back out and aim for a simple head-targetted jab-cross combination to end the round. Simple but powerfully loaded. DING DING (R1 00:00)
00:53 Valenzuela: I’ve been boxing my heart out, but this Di Perry is bigger and younger and has a better fight IQ than I anticipated. I’m thinking the bell is gonna ring and I can regroup, but so much can happen in 10 seconds in boxing, it’s why I love it, and why I hate it all at the time. Di breaks the clinch suddenly, after pummelling my head and side with short punches that annoy more than they hurt, but now I get flung backwards. Before I can react, your left jab punches out, hitting me just below my navel and above my sagging waistband, ugggg……and then as I start to move my guard up, a jab – cross flys out, hitting me in the face, snapping my head back, my knees buckle slightly from the impact, but I keep on my feet, blinking my eyes as my sweat sprays off my face. As the bell rings, you are backing away from me, gloves up…..I don’t have to move to my corner, as I’m already there…and ready to plop down onto the stool this is brought out and spit my mouth guard into a buck as I taste a little blood in my mouth.
01:17 Valenzuela: As I take in water and get toweled down, my coach starts talking fast " Val, listen, you're not outclassed, but you let her control too much of that round. Your uppercut and left hook were the best punches landed, but she used her size, reach, and pressure to back you into corners and keep you reacting. You missed early, let her clinch without resistance, and took too many punches on the gloves without answering cleanly. For Round 2, you need to close distance with double jabs, slip under her shots, and work her body; especially with uppercuts and hooks. If she clinches, dig punches to her ribs and keep working until the ref steps in. Angle out of corners, don’t back up in straight lines, and make this your fight inside. She’s younger and bigger, but you’ve got the grit and fight IQ, now show it."
10:42 Valenzuela: The fight is being video recorded and I look up at a large screen on the wall, to see the last moment of the fight in slow motion, me taking a right cross to the chin/mouth.

22:06 AmateurGirlie: I strut confidently back to my corner and plonk down on my stool. My coach slips between the rope and tugs out my large gumshield. She briefs me: "Di, you’re doing great — now stick to your strengths: use your height, reach, and strength to keep Carlotta at range with sharp jabs, and cut off the ring to trap her in corners where you can unload short combos - 3 punches max. Be first and be last in exchanges — hit, reset, and don't admire your shots. If she closes in, clinch immediately, smother her offense, and lean on her to wear her down. Keep attacking the body with hooks — she’s feeling those shots — then go back upstairs to the head once she drops her guard. Stay calm, keep smart pressure, stay balanced, and don’t let her out of the corner once she’s there. She’s already doubting herself — keep control and break her down systematically."
22:10 AmateurGirlie: DING I'm back on my feet energetically, mouthguard stuffed back in, and ready to go. I've just had my first proper round in a boxing ring and I'm doing okay. I saw how your knees went a bit right at the end there, and the video replays show it clearly too. But I know you'll want to change things up to make the fight go your way, so I can't get complacent. I stride across the ring again, trying to gain as much ground as I can. I follow my coach's lead, firing off two hard jabs and a cross to your head. Hopefully, either they will land and make an impact or get you going backwards. I feel confident but very aware too. (R2 1:50)
22:14 Valenzuela: The 10 second warning goes off, and I get to my feet feeling a little rocky, this new gal was more skilled than I thought, but I’m confident I can put her down hard in round 2, in spite of her size advantage. My mouth guard is popped back in, and as I get to my feet, I lower my right glove to my crouch to adjust my groin protector. I slap my gloves together…and then DING!....It’s on again, but across the ring I no longer see a nervous young boxer, I see some looking to build a reputation in the boxing world. I form an orthodox stance and move out of my corner, bouncing a little slower on my feet, a little nervous now, but ready for another round as I go towards ring centre. I bob a little from side to side and taunt you by a wave of my gloves for you to bring it (R2 2:00). Two jabs and a cross come out, as you want to get aggressive early in the round. Each punch hits my guard, forcing me to take a couple of steps back, and then I come back at you, send a big overhand left at your right glove, trying to push it down, so I can send a right cross at the right side of your face, hoping to get back into the fight (R2 1:40)
22:23 AmateurGirlie: You head backwards in response to my long-range strikes, just as I wanted. I see you telegraphing the overhand left, which is at the very limit of its range anyway. I bend low and step to my right to sweep underneath the overhand punch, firing a low left hook to your right side as I go. I straighten up, now half a step to your left and aim another jab-cross pairing to your head to make the most of your missed power punch. I need to get this gal back and trapped once again, but this bob-and-weave fight suits me as the younger and fitter boxer. (R2 1:30)
22:30 Valenzuela:

You read my intentions like a book, you bend low and sweep under the overhand and then hit my wide open right side with a mean left hook, it shakes me, but I regain my balance as your jab cross fly out, hitting my gloves back into my face and making me stumble back another couple steps. I don’t want to get trapped again, so decide to go toe to toe, and send a 1-2 jab cross at your guard, trying to make you close up tight in the centre, then step left and try a left hook at your jaw, trying to curve it around your guard as step left and forward. (R2 1:20)
22:52 AmateurGirlie: My hook lands and you stumble a bit. I'm clearly making my mark. My blows onto your guard push you further back and I close in to keep the pressure on. I let your 1-2 strike my guard, but my arms are strong still so my gloves stay rigid in place. My vision is blocked a bit through and your step forward closes the gap more than I'd like. The left hook grazes my right glove a bit but still lands powerfully on my jaw - not the first time its been targetted in this fight... Once again my head snaps left and I go into clinch as I try to recover quickly, throwing a right uppercut on my way inside. My head isn't swimming but punches like that are no small deal. I lean on you heavily and trap your arms against your side as I try and shove you back to the ropes once more. (R2 1:10)
23:21 Valenzuela: My hook connects powerfully with your jaw, sweat flies off your face, I can feel the impact on my knuckles, but you don’t retreat, instead you come forward, slamming an uppercut into my jaw, snapping my head back, I have to bite down hard on my mouth guard to keep it inside my mouth, and as my head goes woozy….you slam into me with your sweaty body before I can follow up with more punches. And my arms get pinned to my side, trapping me like a wrestler. I begin to stumble as you press forward, but you are forcing me to bear a good deal of your weight and before I can dig my heals in, I’m moving the short distance back towards the ropes, until my back presses deeply into them. Your breath is heavy and hot on my neck as the ref says “C’mon ladys, box it out! (R2 1:00)
23:23 AmateurGirlie: Your body is steaming hot as I shove it back into the ropes. Both of us are sweating freely and my arms slip a bit over your upper arms and shoulders as I try to keep control. I hear your heavy breathing in my ear as you try, unsuccessfully, to push me away. I'm surprised the ref doesn't step in, just orders us to 'box it out'. Fine by me now I'm recovered from your hard hook and have you where I want you. I release you and step back, firing off a stiff left hook to your temple as I go, trying to get a punch in before your pinned gloves can get back up. Hoping your guard will be unconsolidated still I go back as far I can whilst keeping you in range and fire off a barrage of 1-2s to your head area. Every now and then I mix in a low left hook to creep under the guard. (R2 00:50)
23:31 Valenzuela: That uppercut did not knock me out, but I sure can’t absorb many more of those, my jaw feels ragged. The ref does not yet order a clean break, but instead tells us to work through it. This puts me at a big disadvantage given the 25 lbs weight difference, and 6 inch height difference. Suddenly, your arms come off from around mine, and you hit the padding on the head gear above my forehead, hitting me with a wicked left hook.

It twists my face to my right, disorienting me, again my knees buckle slightly, but BAM! BAM! your 1-2 punch come across as my back presses into the ropes, snapping my head back as your black glove compresses over my nose. I raise my gloves to try to protect my head, but BAM! you change levels hitting me near my liver with a left hook. The ref watches on now closely but sees my gloves come up, as I try to protect myself. (R2 00:40)
23:46 AmateurGirlie: *bam umph bam umph* I'm throwing and landing regularly now, but always bringing my gloves back to guard and keeping moving so that a rogue counter doesn't take me out completely. I see the ref in my peripheral vision taking a close interest in our exchange. More than that I see a bit of blood appearing on your face, from somewhere... I keep up the 1-2s to keep you busy. I go back downstairs with a low right this time. I jump back up with a hard left hook sailing towards the side of your red-padded head. I hope to skittle you along the ropes with this one. (R2 00:30)
23:55 Valenzuela: I’m now in simple survival mode, trying not to get knocked out or have the ref call a TKO on me. The fact that I was able to raise my gloves back up forestalled the TKO, but this Gringa bitch is really working me over on the ropes, and if I step left, she steps right and blocks my escape, it’s like trying to get through a brick wall. She is keeping her distance, picking me apart with her reach, not letting me get in my range. I go into a peek-a-boo stance, keeping my gloves up in front of my face, good for defence, but not so good for punching back. Your guard is always there, never leaving as you strike out. The 1-2 keep landing and punching my guard back in my face, blinding me to the low right that hits my side, making me grimace…..then a hard left hook sneaks around my guard, and hits the side of my padding on my head gear twisting my face around….control is slipping from me. (R2 00:20)…..mtc
REF: “STOP! Step back!” I wave off Di Perry with my left hand, firm and direct, then square up to Valenzuela and extend my right hand toward her chest to keep her still. She sags slightly. She’s still standing, gloves up. But I look straight into her eyes. “You okay?” I ask sharply. She nods, but her breath is ragged. I count out loud. “One… two… three… four… keep those gloves up for me… five… six…” She tries to reset her stance. “Seven… EIGHT. Alright. Show me you’re ready.” She nods again. I pause just a half-second longer than normal. “Box!” But I’m watching her closely now. One clean unanswered combo from here — I’m waving it off. She’s on the edge.
00:23 AmateurGirlie: "STOP" the ref orders. I pause my punches mid swing, sort of shocked, what's going on. I assume I have done something wrong, like a foul or something. But the ref pushes me away and stands in front of you. Only my coach's shout gets me into a neutral corner. I see the ref put their hands up and start COUNTING! I put my arms up on the ropes and listen intently to the count and watch you try and recover. "three... four..." I don't know what I want more, for this to be over or for this to carry on. I sort of love it here in the ring. "five... six..." I readjust my groin guard as best I can with my thick right glove, as it has slipped a bit in all the clinching action. It's still uncomfortable but I hardly notice now. "seven... eight..." I really can't believe I've put someone in a position where they need a count, maybe I can really do this boxing thing.
00:23 AmateurGirlie: But in a flash it's on again and you're back, with your gloves up despite the battered face and body. The ref brings you back into the ring, away from the ropes dammit, and waves me forward. "Box". I still have clean ring around me and want to see if you can make it to the end of the round. I go aggressive. With my face behind my right glove I aim a left hook at your guard, trying to batter down your guard. Hopefully your arms are tiring. A stiff right cross follows to take advantage, before another low left to try and really make your body scream. I'm trying to end the match here and now, without getting too carried away. (R2 00:10)
00:29 Valenzuela: Damn! I had an 8 count done on me, and the ref is now watching me closely. The 8 count helped though, it stopped the mauling I was getting and gave me a little recovery time, not much, but I was done for without that little break. And more importantly, the ref moved me off the ropes! That’s a relief. Still, I got a gal built like a brick wall coming for me. My gloves are up in high guard, abs tensed for the remaining seconds of round 2. My mind is in a fog, and I crouch down some. You come at me fast, and I know you wanna take me out before the round ends. A left hook swipes at my guard, and yes, these 10 oz gloves are feeling heavy, they get knocked aside, and a stiff right comes out fast, and by a miracle, I slip my head to the my left so that you glove goes over my right shoulder, the low left follows fast, but I step left, and that increase in the distance takes the real sting out of the punch when it hits my right side. By muscle memory, I throw back a right hook over your left shoulder towards the side of your head gear, hopping to show I’m still here….DING!
00:50 AmateurGirlie: In the middle of the ring you are hard to pin down, and with just 10 seconds I don't have the time to catch you. Somehow your punchdrunk brain gets you to slip my right cross, which I'm sure would have ended things. My low left doesn't do much either as you step away with only a small groan of acknowledgement. Then *BAM* I thought you were on the run but that hook catches me flush on the side of my headguard and I see white for a second but keep my feet and hope no body recognises my stumble as... DING (R2 00:00)... mtc
00:54 AmateurGirlie: The ref doesn't say anything so I think I got away with it and head back to my corner. My mouthguard comes out and I can't see any blood in it.

My coach sponges me down: "Good work, Di — you put her down last round, made the ref count! That’s huge. You had her hurt and pinned, and you stayed on her smart — that’s what we want. Listen though: you got clipped at the end there, right on the ear — don’t forget that. She’s still dangerous if you get lazy. Stay behind your jab, keep cutting her off, don't let her breathe. Mix the body and head, but don’t get greedy. She’s hurt — be smart, be sharp, and break her down the rest of the way. Pressure smart, punch clean, finish strong!"
00:56 Valenzuela: My hook takes you by surprise, a solid blow, but I feel woozy as the bell rings, and walk slowly to my corner to sit, have the blood whipped off my nose, take some water, and listen to coach saying “Val, you’re still in this—but just barely. You’ve gotta move, do you hear me? No more standing still, no more ropes. Tighten your guard, angle out, punch back. You stop punching, he’ll stop the fight. Use your head, use your heart. You’ve done harder things. Now dig the hell in and show her who you are.” I sniffle my nose and then stand, as the mouth guard is pushed back in, and I stand to wait for the bell. DING! DING! DING! I can’t even remember what the coach said….I know I got to let this gal make a mistake and then nail her with a solid punch….simple…it’s happened many history of boxing. I form a tight guard to protect my head and keep my elbows tucked in as I approach the freight train. (R3 2:00)
01:12 AmateurGirlie: DING DING I'm up. Mouthguard back in. The black rubber seating firmly in my mouth. I'm breathing hard now and my gumshield is thick and slippery in my mouth, and still warm from the last round. I see you steaming in. If I did enough to win the first round you must need a KO to win this fight, so I should be careful. Me meet in the dead centre of the ring and I recognise your tight guard. With gloves high and elbows tuck forward I'll have to try and go round. I put a couple of hard punches on the guard to pin you down, maybe punch the gloves back into your face. Then, staying as far back as I can I reach low and left, trying to sneak round that tough stance. I know these liver shots have done you some damage. Let's see if we can start any bruises. (R3 1:50).
01:18 Valenzuela: You come out of your corner showing good stamina….and I’m battered, I don’t even know how many hits I’ve taken, my body and head ache. I’ve got 2 minutes left to find away to put you down hard, I tell myself. Those punches you send to my guard punch my gloves back into my face, blinding me for a moment, but it’s enough. You reach low and left, and I try to pivot, but I’m a half-second too slow. Your glove digs in hard just beneath my right elbow, right into the soft spot, that cursed liver again. It’s like a bolt of electricity fires through my ribs. My legs freeze for a beat, then buckle slightly. I gasp, and I hunch slightly, instinctively dropping my right elbow tighter, but it’s too late. I can’t even curse, I’m too busy trying to stay upright. My guard wavers as my body folds. I grit down hard on my mouthguard, as the ref watches. (R3 1:40)
01:27 AmateurGirlie: The punch. The groan. *ugh* from your mouth as that weak spot on your right side is hit AGAIN. I see your wobble and buckle. I actually pause for a second as I think you're heading to the canvas, but there you stay - on your feet. You are bent so low it's hard to find a legal target to strike. I step in and the best I can do is launch a low right uppercut at your forehead, but it doesn't have much room to swing and build impact. It's hard to 'stand and fight' when your shorter opponent won't stand straight! (R3 1:30)
01:32 Valenzuela: The ref is watching closely and sees I took a second shot to the liver, and hunched over, you slam an uppercut into my forehead, but it hits the padding, and the it did not have much power. I grit my teeth and stand again. The ref looks like he is gonna call the fight, so I step out at you, firing a double jab, at your face, hoping to take you by surprise. And then a right cross at your solar plexus.....I'm getting wild and reckless, born of desperation. Only because of my ring time can I stay in this fight...i've been hit a lot many times in the ring in many, many fights (R3 1:20)
01:41 AmateurGirlie: She's up! And I instantly regret it as I eat two HARD jabs. The first knocks my head back hard and kills my forward momentum, the second lands just as my head returns. I've taken two big knocks that have even loosed my mouthguard, which slips off my teeth. My gloves drop and for the first time I'm properly open. That cross strikes my chest with impact and takes half the air from my lungs. It throws me backwards, retreating for the first time in the fight. Through drills and discipline I put out a double jab of my own to cover myself, but I'm firmly on the back foot. (R3 1:10)
01:44 Valenzuela: I get lucky, as the newbie boxer gets caught off guard, not realising how much damage someone like me can take and yet still fight back, even with a face that is bruised and a body that is aching. You move back, throwing out a couple of defensive jabs, but I don’t walk into them, I take my time to come forward, slowly. You look winded, so I lunge forward suddenly, testing the waters with a 1-2 jab cross at your guard, then I drop my left and twist at my hips to send an uppercut at your solar plexus again, hopping to stun you. (R3 1:00)
01:53 AmateurGirlie: Damn, my jabs do nothing and earn me little time to recover myself. But I'm pleased that my guard hold off your 1-2 firmly, I'm still in this! As you twist left I think you're trying to come round me. I step to my right to match you, but I misread. I walk into another solar plexus strike and am now fully winded. I try and move back but can't get far without oxygen. I cover up in peekaboo guard, desperate for a second to breath again. (R3 00:50)
01:56 Valenzuela: I feel a charge of adrenalin rush through my body as I realise that I can win this fight. My jab/cross combo hit your guard, but that sweet uppercut SLAMs hard into your midsection, compromising your breathing and you slump forward a bit….and that’s all the invitation I need, you cover up, but I try to power a right uppercut between your gloves towards your chin, twisting my body to increase the speed and power, and then swing a left hook at your jaw and a right cross towards your chin, breathing hard, but at least breathing rather than try to suck air like you. I feel like I’m on fire, wild and free, finally boxing my game. (R3 00:40)
02:08 AmateurGirlie: I'm sucking air as hard as I can, trying to stay upright to make it easier. No luck for me though. If I can't breathe I'm weak and my guard stands no chance. The uppercut slams through my weakened gloves and catches me flush on the jaw. I hadn't had a chance to reseat my mouthguard from your hard double jab earlier in the round and it tumbles out of my lips now... and I follow it down! I reach out my right glove as I land firmly on my yellow trunks... I'm sat up on the canvas but am dazed to say the least. "DOWN" calls the referee and you dash off to a neutral corner, not that I can see that or really even care at this point as the count begins. (R3 00:30) mtc
02:20 AmateurGirlie: "One... Two..." I look down my legs to my bare pale legs and pink trainers, they are just coming back into focus. "Three... four..." I'm breathing again, filling my lungs. "Five... six..." my stamina is still there and really these are the first big combinations I've taken in the fight. Push myself to one knee. "Seven... eight..." I'm up and put my gloves into a convincing guard. The referee seems okay for me to continue - "wanna carry on Di?". I nod hard and fake a smile. The ref collects my gumshield from where you knocked out to the canvas and I accept it back gratefully. That buys me a crucial few seconds before the ref says "BOX!" and waves you back in. My guard is strong and firm. I am recovered and determined. (R3 00:20)
02:23 Valenzuela: I look at you, and decide I have to go all out, if I don't KO you, I will loose the fight. I'm not worried about defense, so I rush towards you once the ref says "BOX!" I send a quick 1-2-1-2 jab-cross-jab-cross combo towrds your face, trying to blast away those black gloves, then swing a left hook at your jaw, throwing everything I got at you in the remaining seconds of the fight, sweat dripping from my bruised face. (R3 00:10)
02:33 AmateurGirlie: As expected you steamroller in, as I did in the last round, trying to end it here and now. 20 seconds to survive. The fight restarts in the middle of the ring and I move backwards to kill time and avoid your nasty 1-2 combos. You give chase and a hook flies towards my jaw once more. It's amazing I haven't lost a tooth by now - I need a double-mouthguard next time. I bob my head back and the hook flies in front of my now reddened and slightly puffy face. I bob back in and throw a 1-2-1-2 of my own to keep you away. I want to end on a high, even though winning this round is unlikely. In truth I'm still a little punch drunk as the bell rings. (R3 00:00)
02:37 Valenzuela: I try to kill you with a flurry of 1-2 combos, but you retreat quickly, and then you bob your head back and my hook hits nothing but stale air. I feel unbalanced as my arm over extends, and you bob back in punching my face with a jab-cross that rocks my head back. I step back and the last two punches hit air in front of my face. DING!.....I walk back to my corner...hoping maybe I won round 1, some how....
02:41 AmateurGirlie: DING DING DING We hug in the ring, both too tired to say anything though. I make it back to my corner, worse for wear. My coach reaches to take off my gloves and remove my mouthguard but I decline. I want to wait until the result to start relaxing. I hope I did enough in those first two rounds...
The loud speaker comes on, and the judges announce their scores, Round 1 10:9 to Perry!; Round 2 10:8 to Perry; Round 3 10:8 to Valenzuela!; The winner of the fight by unanimous decision is DI PERRY!!!!!!! 28:27!!!!!.....we are standing on either side of the ref, who raises your arm:
02:51 AmateurGirlie: WINNER! On my debut too! It's amazing to beat such an experience boxer like Val. A rematch sometime is definitely in order. I turn to hug you and congratulate you on a great match. "Thank you for that, almost got me in that last round" I slur through my gumshield.
02:52 Valenzuela: "Next time I will get you chica!"
AI judge’s notes for each round:
This round had everything—speed, grit, control, and real damage. Carlotta came out sharp, moving well and throwing with intent, but landed little. Di settled in quickly, pressing forward with smart, effective pressure. The first clear scoring moment was hers: crisp jabs, straight rights, then a thudding hook to the ribs that made Valenzuela wince. Carlotta answered with the round’s best punch—a clean uppercut that staggered Di—but couldn’t follow it up cleanly. Di regained control, landing a stiff jab and a heavy overhand right that snapped Val’s head back. She dictated the geography, keeping Val on the back foot. In the final minute, Carlotta tried to rally but got outmuscled. Di’s hooks to the body and head wore her down. Val landed a sharp left hook late, but Di absorbed it, clinched effectively, and finished stronger. In the closing seconds, Di trapped her in the corner and ripped a jab to the body, then a jab-cross to the face that left Val wobbling. No knockdown, but a dominant finish. Val had two strong moments—the uppercut and left hook—but Di outlanded her, controlled the space, and owned the round. Score: 10–9 Di Perry. Nearly a 10–8 without Val’s clean counters. She’s hanging on, but just barely.
Round 2 was a clear 10–8 for AmateurGirlie, who dominated from the opening bell to the standing eight count. She controlled distance with sharp jabs and crosses, dodged Valenzuela’s early power shots with slick movement, and punished her with clean combinations to the head and body. Val landed a strong hook midway through the round, but it was her only real success as she was driven into the ropes and gradually overwhelmed. AmateurGirlie’s relentless pressure, varied attack, and disciplined defense left Val reeling, forced into a peek-a-boo stance, absorbing shot after shot without effective counters. The referee stepped in at the 20-second mark for a standing eight count, recognizing Val’s lack of response and visible signs of damage, including a grimace from a body shot and blood on her face. Though Val stayed on her feet, she was clearly surviving, not competing. The round ended with momentum entirely in AmateurGirlie’s hands and a potential stoppage looming in Round 3.
Round 3 Score: 10–8 Valenzuela
The round began with AmateurGirlie applying smart pressure, targeting Valenzuela’s liver again with a sharp left that visibly hurt her and nearly forced a stoppage. Val was bent over, her guard wavering, and on the brink. But she dug deep and turned the momentum with a desperate double jab and a crushing cross to the solar plexus that forced Di onto the back foot for the first time. Regaining control, Val advanced with precision, then broke through with a punishing uppercut–hook–cross combination that sent Di to the canvas, her mouthguard flying. Di beat the count and survived the closing seconds, but Val’s knockdown, ring control, and powerful rally left no doubt. It was a clear 10–8 round for the veteran.

Linda, thank you! I'm only an amateur so the short fight definitely help me - but I needed all the help I could get against such a tough veteran. In a future (maybe longer) bout we'll see if I can keep it up
