As we approach midwinter many folks begin to look with longing toward the promise of spring with its warmer, longer days and the explosion of new life after a long, dark winter. In short many begin to look forward to the end of the winter blues. Here at SECW our first Tour is all about that slow, southern genre of the deep delta - the blues.

The blues have deep roots in American history, particularly African-American history of which there is plenty here in the South East. The blues originated here on Southern plantations in the 19th century, refined and expanded in the decades after emancipation and into the Jim Crow era of the early 20th century. Its creators were slaves, ex-slaves and the descendants of slaves—African-American sharecroppers who sang as they toiled in the cotton and vegetable fields. It's generally accepted that the music evolved from African spirituals, African chants, work songs, field hollers, rural fife and drum music, revivalist hymns, and country dance music.

While blues lyrics often deal with personal adversity, the music itself goes far beyond self-pity. The blues is also about overcoming hard luck, saying what you feel, ridding yourself of frustration, letting your hair down, and simply having fun. The best of the blues is visceral, cathartic, reflective, hopeful, and intensely emotional. From unbridled joy to deep sadness, no form of music communicates more genuine emotion. The essence of the blues encapsulates and defines what we try to do in the ring with our matches. The stories of overcoming odds, perseverance in the face of adversity, the joy of celebrating a victory and the agony of defeat and set back we tell in the physical nature of our art are the blues made flesh and bone.
