(In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.)
The sky above Bastion Primaris burned green with the afterglow of countless explosions. The plains below were a twisted wasteland of scorched earth and shattered ceramite, and from the horizon came the roar — the brutal, thunderous bellow of Ork war engines rolling ever closer.
Captain Nathan James Gingerbread of the Azure Blades Chapter stood atop the broken battlements, his power armor scorched, his crimson cape torn and dust-streaked. His helm, marked with the sigil of a burning sword, hung at his belt. His eyes were cold iron.
“Orks,” he spat. “A tide without end.”
Around him, what remained of his company gathered — a ragtag band of thirty-three Space Marines, survivors from shattered squads and broken lines. Their armor bore mismatched heraldry from the 3rd, 7th, and 10th companies; their ammo was low, their faith unbroken.
Brother-Sergeant Malthus hefted a heavy bolter that glowed dull red from overuse.
“Captain, auspex shows another three mobs approaching. Heavy armor in the rear.”
Gingerbread nodded. “Then we hold. Here. At the wall.”
He turned to his warriors, his voice booming across the comm-net, a voice that carried the weight of centuries of blood and duty.
“Brothers of the Azure Blades! The Emperor does not count our numbers — He counts our resolve. We are His sword, His wrath, and today we cut deep!”
A roar answered him — a defiant, thunderous “For the Emperor!”
The first wave hit like a storm.
Greenskin sluggas and shootas filled the air with crude lead. Bolter fire answered, disciplined and precise. Each round detonated an Ork skull or tore apart a charging brute in a shower of green ichor.
Brother-Sergeant Malthus’ heavy bolter sang a hymn of destruction, spitting fire in long, rhythmic bursts.
To the flank, Brother Pyriel, a Devastator armed with a plasma cannon, vaporized an entire squad of Stormboyz mid-leap, their jump packs exploding into shards of molten metal.
And at the center, Captain Gingerbread himself strode forth, relic power sword “Soulcutter” in one hand, bolt pistol “Righteous Grief” in the other. His blade carved arcs of blue light through Ork flesh, each swing a sermon of annihilation.
“Second wave incoming!” came the warning.
The ground trembled — Ork Warbikes, engines screaming, spewing exhaust and madness. Behind them lumbered a Deff Dread, claws snapping, eyes burning red.
Gingerbread raised his voice:
“Brother Octavian! Krak missiles!”
With a roar, the Devastator knelt, shouldered his launcher, and fired. The missile streaked true — slamming into the Dread’s chest, turning it into a fireball of shrapnel and oil.
But the bikes broke through — too fast, too many. They smashed into the Marine line.
Brother Cain fell beneath spinning wheels. Brother-Sergeant Malthus was thrown against the wall, armor cracked. Gingerbread charged forward, cutting down the lead biker in a single sweep, his power sword igniting the Ork’s blood to vapor.
“Stand your ground!” he roared, voice like thunder.
“We are the Emperor’s wall! Break, but do not bend!”
Hours bled into eternity.
By nightfall, the field was a graveyard of Ork corpses and shattered ceramite. Smoke hung thick. Only a dozen Marines remained — battered, bloodied, but alive.
Then the horizon shook again. The Warboss himself came, riding a looted tank, bellowing challenge.
“YOU HUMIES THINK YOUZ TOUGH?! COME ON, DEN! ME’LL KRUMP YA ALL!”
Gingerbread stepped forward, his armor cracked, his sword humming low with dying energy. He activated the last melta charge on his belt and hurled it into the tank’s treads. The explosion flipped the vehicle, hurling the Warboss through the air in a plume of fire.
As the beast rose, roaring, Gingerbread met him blade to claw.
The duel was brutal — the Captain’s sword against a chain-axe the size of a man. Sparks flew; blood fell. At last, with a final cry, Gingerbread drove Soulcutter deep into the Ork’s heart, splitting it in two.
The Warboss collapsed, shuddering. The horde broke.
When dawn came, the silence was heavy.
Of the Azure Blades, only six still stood. Captain Gingerbread looked to the rising sun, his armor drenched in gore, his blade dulled but unbroken.
Brother Pyriel approached. “Orders, my Captain?”
Gingerbread sheathed his sword. “We rebuild the wall. Then we pray.”
He looked to the horizon — where more smoke, more war, awaited.
“The Emperor still has work for us.”
Thus ended the Stand at Bastion Primaris, where Captain Nathan James Gingerbread and his brothers held the line against ten thousand Orks — and in doing so, carved their names forever into the Book of Heroes.
“In the darkness, we are His fire. In the storm, we are His blade.” — Captain Nathan James Gingerbread, Azure Blades Chapter.

Chapter History
The Azure Blades are a steadfast and pragmatic Chapter, known for their iron discipline and mastery of defensive warfare. They often serve as garrison and relief forces in beleaguered Imperial worlds, earning the nickname “The Shielded Flame” among Imperial Guard regiments.
The Chapter’s records are fragmented, their earliest archives burned during the Cataclysm of Solis, when a warp storm engulfed their home system for nearly a century. When the storm abated, only fragments of the Chapter remained — among them, Captain Nathan James Gingerbread, survivor of the 3rd Company and hero of the Bastion Primaris Stand.
Chapter Organization
The Azure Blades loosely follow the Codex Astartes but emphasize mixed-unit cohesion — integrating Devastator and Assault squads within Tactical command structures. Their doctrine prizes flexibility and defensive counter-tactics over pure aggression.
Veteran Captains are known as Wardens of Flame, and each commands a Citadel Company, responsible for both defense and retaliation campaigns.
Notable Engagements
The Siege of Bastion Primaris (M41.989) —
Captain Gingerbread and thirty-three Marines held the fortress walls against a WAAAGH! numbering in the hundreds. The defense lasted three days without reinforcement, ending with the death of Warboss Gorzag Skullsplitta.
The Burning of Ilyria Secundus (M41.992) —
The Azure Blades executed a scorched-earth defense against Tyranid splinter fleet Xyrix-Delta, purging the surface to deny biomass to the swarm.
The Hekaton Rift Defense (M42.003) —
Librarian Virel of the Azure Blades sacrificed himself to seal a warp rift with the Emperor’s Light, earning the Chapter a century of penitence from the Ecclesiarchy for “heresy of sorcery.”
Chapter Beliefs
The Azure Blades hold that the Emperor’s flame must be preserved, not through blind charge but through endurance and sacrifice. To them, every wall is sacred, every bastion a shrine.
Their Chaplains preach that the Emperor’s will is a purifying fire — those who endure its heat are made perfect weapons; those who do not are consumed.
