It can not only ruin vital parts of the story, but that "Deleted Character" image isn't the most appealing.
That's the whole point, so people replace it with a nicer one.
My suggestion is that when a account is deleted, that the image used on the account remain intact so the stories are not ruined. Your suggestion is not in line with data protection laws around the globe.
Stories count as comments or blog posts, once you selected them as 'public' and every character added approves that, we can leave them up even if you delete your account.
But your pictures are part of your profile and therefore must be removed latest within 30days of notice. - The notice starts as soon as you confirm your termination. - We don't see any reason why we would need to delay it to 30days, so we remove it eminently.
In some cases, users even request the removal of their old stories, which we comply with.
We can swop to another licensed avatar picture for a deleted story - but I don't see how that would fix the concerns here as it would still not show the original picture and instead only be a placeholder.
Alternatively:
If all agree that stories are "ruined" when our default avatar picture is shown, we can take another approach instead and remove the story completely. This would be in line with data protection laws. As we are not required to leave information up, only to remove them.
And no, the disk space for images has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is purely legal compliance. That's the same reason, why each picture upload requires your confirmation that you own the copyright to the picture in question. If you delete your account, the right to display this picture is gone.
Thank you TECG for your explanation and it does explain the issues you face here and always greatly appreciated. I do understand that when a profile is deleted that the pics go as well so I understand where you are coming from.
Cheers fromJason

Hi Madison,
i have been having this discussion for some time with other members, that all agree that it would be far more appealing if the deleted person's main image was retained,
The image that is put in their place is is a little creepy and also hideous in my opinion only and would turm members off reading what could well be a fabulous story. People leave for various reasons and some are deleted for bad behavior, but the matches may well be classics and through my reviews I have found a few that are. I have also had two people not like my reviews and that has cost them views and bad feelings not from me as I don't take it personal but from my friends that know I was badly treated ,but I would not like to see those members deleted and all trace of them removed as even though they did the wrong thing they are friends and members who write some good stories. .. So I think if it can be done without too much reprogramming that it is something that should be looked at if possible please CF Tech. Sorry to ad more load on you.
Cheers to you Madison for raising a good point.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It sucks when people move on, and all that is left are the stories we wrote with them. What really hurts though is when those stories have the images removed from them because of the deleted account. It can not only ruin vital parts of the story, but that "Deleted Character" image isn't the most appealing.
My suggestion is that when a account is deleted, that the image used on the account remain intact so the stories are not ruined. It would help preserve the memories of the people we lose here. I understand that images take up space, and that this site require resources to maintain. If this request could be accommodated somehow, I believe a large portion of the regulars on the site would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for the explanation. Seeing the legal reasons behind now, this all makes more sense.
