Background:

Annie La Croix-Cruz's story begins with her parents, her African-American father and her Philipina-American mother. Annie's mother grew up as a first generation immigrant to the United States, her maternal grandmother fled as an infant alongside her great-grandparents after the American-Philippines war (1902-1913) after assisting the American government in suppressing rebels. Annie's maternal grandmother then faced persecution (but was never interned) in the second world war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Very few Americans at the time cared for the distinction between a Philipina woman and a Japanese woman. As such, Annie's mother grew up with very strict values and through difficult times in the late 50's and 60's. The Vietnam war didn't help matters and Annie's mother tried to instill these values in her daughter to protect her. Annie's father on the other hand, originally grew up in the deep south, middle-of-nowhere Texas where racism was not serving a cup of coffee at a local diner and making sure who-knew-what about everything. He was a smart young man, studied to become an Actuarial Scientist and ended up working for an insurance company. He ended up moving to California with the thought that the overt racism he experienced would be less in the more liberal and "modern" state known for its acceptance.

Annie La Croix-Cruz grew up in a suburb outside of a major city in California. Her neighbourhood was majority Caucasian but she never noticed much. She attended school and like her father, she gravitated toward STEM fields. She studied mathematics and science but had a keen eye for business. In her teenage years she got into Japanese anime and culture (much to her mother's disappointment when she could have gotten into Philipino culture) becoming more gothy in dress and mannerisms. She played a lot of video games but was never a shut-in. She spent a lot of time in the mall with her friends, mostly window-shopping and talking about anime. Annie maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout highschool and - for the first time in the school's history tied with another boy and girl for a three-way valedictorian-ship. The girl was the captain of the swim team and a varsity cheerleader, second-place state champion. Annie had volunteered at the most school outreach programmes and was an avid participant in the debate team. This secured Annie a scholarship to university and she entered double majoring in accounting and statistics.

During her first year at University, Annie had her first boyfriend, a boy from a rival high school who had fun bantering with Annie about their alma maters' football, basketball and swimming rivalries.
