Shadows of The Past - Part 1

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I get up before you, just before sunrise, I'm careful not to disturb you as I leave the tent. My thigh feels a bit stiff, but your first aid kept the bandage on nice and tight. I listen to the sounds of the jungle as the sun rises. I splash my face with some water from the nearby stream, then quietly pack up the gear while I munch on a protein bar, needing the energy for what was coming. Then I wake you up last thing, and pack our gear. We get in the Van and leave behind our idyllic camp site. I smile to myself, and put my hand on your thigh, giving it a squeeze as I think back to how incredible last night was with you.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I slow the van down as I get closer to David's hideout, we are now only about twenty minutes away, but the last stretch will take us off this bumpy jungle road, little more than a path, and onto a busier road. The Black Holdings don't know exactly where he is hiding, but they know the area he is in, and this is the only road in. I stop the van when I see a flash of something through the trees. I turn to you, my face serious, "Evan, I'm going to go scout. I caught sight of something through the trees. I want to check to make sure the way is clear before we turn onto the main road. Stay safe!"

11:09 Evan_Riley: "wait! What should I do?" the fact that I'm new to this is really shining through but I want to help you. Letting you go off alone makes me feel sick.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I turn to face you, I was going to say that you didn't have the training in stealth that I had, and that you would be a liability. But I realized before I said it that I was wrong. You'd proven yourself more than capable at adapting rapidly. I trusted you. Completely. And I wanted you by my side. What I said was, "Okay, follow me. Stay right behind me, stay as quiet as you can, and keep your eyes peeled." Impulsively, I pull you in for a kiss. "You can do this Evan."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I start to make my way through the trees, carefully choosing my footing to avoid stepping on any branches or twigs, darting from cover to cover behind the trees, until I catch a glimpse. It was exactly as I feared. A roadblock. Several mercenaries, dressed sloppily, were lounging around a couple of trucks arranged to block the road. Damn.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I follow your lead through the forest. My eyes are sharp and I step very carefully, avoiding all potential hazards.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I spot the roadblock you see. "Damn" I mutter. "What do we do?"

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I think fast, "All right Evan, here's the plan. I'll lure those mercs away from the trucks. Then, you need to move at least one of those trucks off the road, drive it into the river over there on the other side of the road. Then, meet me back and the van." I put my forehead up against yours, looking into your eyes, letting you know how much I trusted you. Then, I said simply, "I love you Evan."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I ran forward, then, bursting out of concealment, drawing my pistol, and firing a shot into the back one of the trucks, then ran off, darting behind a tree. Six of the mercenaries suddenly darted after me, sloppily dressed, but all of them fit and muscled, ready for business. Two of them stayed behind though, to guard the trucks. I noticed this, and thought SHIT. But I knew you could handle it.

11:09 Evan_Riley: "I love you too Derek" and you're gone. I can't let you down. I waste no time in forming my own plan. I scan the area and manage to come up with something. It's risky, but I have to try. I make my way to the treeline and start moving along the treeline. I step as silently as I can, but a well-hidden branch snaps under my foot. I bolt behind the nearest tree and hold my breath as I hear voices and footsteps coming towards me. Only one set of footsteps. My heart pounds and I mentally berate myself for being so careless. Every mistake I make just puts you in more danger. Stupid Evan.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I need to move. I retreat deeper into the trees until I'm far enough away that I can watch my would-be killer. He checks behind the very tree where I was hiding. He scans the surrounding area, shakes his head, and returns to the trucks. I think I catch the Portuguese word for "animal" in what he shouts at his partner.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I'm back on the move. I made a little bit of progress. Just a little further and I'll be behind their blockade and I can make a beeline for the trucks behind their backs.

11:09 Evan_Riley: It works flawlessly. Before I can even believe it, I'm at the trucks. I can hear them muttering to each other just a few feet away. I decide not to engage right away. I try to move silently, going truck to truck looking for keys. I reason that they'd keep at least one of the trucks ready to go at a moment's notice. Luck smiles on me and I find what I'm after.

11:09 Evan_Riley: Carefully, I open the door. It creaks slightly and I freeze. I keep totally still until it's clear they aren't going to investigate and I open the door the rest of the way. More stupid mistakes. I can't waste anymore time. I slam the door shut and hit the locks. The guards spring into action trying to pry the door open. I notice they don't fire their guns. Either they're really worried about damaging company property, or they know it would be useless because this vehicle is bulletproof. I bring the beast to life and gun it down the road, leaving an opening just big enough for us to get through.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I remember what you said. I shouldn't deviate from the plan. But these two will be troublesome later if I don't do something. I whip the truck around, just barely avoid rolling the thing over. I floor it right at the guards now frantically firing their guns at the truck hurtling towards them. But not a single bullet gets through. Their employer wouldn't skimp on something like this.

11:09 Evan_Riley: One of them jumps away just in time. The other isn't so lucky. The truck hits him at top speed. A whole and complete man becomes a burst of blood and viscera. I turn sharply and jump out, letting the vehicle roll into the river. One guard is obviously down. What's left of him is beyond recognition. The other, however. Is pointing his gun right at me.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I'm racing through the trees, leading the six pursuers away from the two trucks. Evan can do this. I trust him completely. A bullet smashes into a tree trunk right next to my head, and I duck to the right, throwing myself into a thicket of dense foliage. I need to lose these bastards and get back to the van. I hear a truck engine gunning in the distance, followed by a loud splash.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Thinking to myself, WELL DONE Evan. I fucking knew he could do it. For just a few seconds, maybe 10, I'm out of sight from my pursuers, thanks to the heavy foliage. I don't hesitate, but leap up, grabbing a tree branch, sweat pouring off me, I muscle up onto the tree branch, and clamber up into the tree as high as I can make it.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: The six men charge beneath me, blundering through the foliage, never bothering to look up. I breathe a sigh of relief. I quickly lower myself down to the jungle floor, breathing heavy.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I turn back the way I came, headed towards the roadblocks. It's a bit risky, not sure how long it will take the other six men to realize they were duped. But the two men that stayed behind were armed, and I'd never live with myself if anything happened to you.

11:09 Evan_Riley: The guy has me at gunpoint, but he's visibly shaken. "Christ, you're just a kid." He couldn't be older than 20. It's a shame he's found himself in this life. He was very clearly blessed with good looks. I wonder if he mourns the life he could have had. It looks like this life doesn't agree with him. He does his best to order me not to move, but there's no confidence behind it. "You understand English?" I say to him. He nods. "Listen to me. You don't need to do this. No one is watching you right now. You could walk away. Put the gun down and just go."

11:09 Evan_Riley: He seems to be listening. I'm able to slowly move towards him. I have my hands up in a placating gesture. "You are so young, man..." I continue inching towards him. I ask him to put the gun down, but he doesn't. I have no choice but to try and disarm him. I strike out once I'm close enough but the kid has me beat in reaction time. He clocks me across the jaw with the gun in a stunning blow.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I just barely stay on my feet and dodge his next strike. He's given me an opening. I tackle him to the ground and punch him square in the center of his handsome face. I hate to admit it, but the sight of this hot young Brazilian under me with blood smeared over his face is a weird turn on.

11:09 Evan_Riley: His arms are pinned under me, spread out on either side. He's still holding his gun but it's useless now. "Let go of the gun or I'll end you." The fear in his eyes is almost heartbreaking but he obeys and releases his grip. I snatch the weapon and jump to my feet.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I point it at him and fire a warning shot. It whizzes dangerously close to his head. "I should kill you. You'll just be trouble for us in the future... but you might be useful. You're coming with me." I smirk at him "My boyfriend will decide what to do with you."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: As I'm running towards the blockade, I hear a gunshot, and my heart goes cold. I'm thinking of Evan. Not going to imagine what the gunshot means. I run harder, the trees blurring, until I burst onto the road and there you are, kneeling over a handsome, young Brazilian man, maybe 20 if that. Young, muscled, and terrified. I scan the scene, and see the remains of another man, he looks like roadkill.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I kneel beside you, my face breaking out into a wide grin, "Well done Evan! Couldn't have done it better myself. Let's take him with us, he can tell us if there are any more surprises ahead." You continue to amaze at every turn. "Let's get back to the van!"

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I drive my fist into the side of the young man's head, a precise and calculated blow, just hard enough to knock him out, but not do him any serious injury. I sling him over my shoulder, and turn to you, noting the pistol you have in your hand. I nod. I never wanted to teach you how to use a gun, but it seems, that, once again, you are one step ahead of me. "Watch our back on the way to the Van!"

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Then, legs working hard, the man's body over my shoulder, I leg it back to the Van. I dump him in the back seat. "Keep an eye on him Evan!" I ask, Then fire up the van, and haul us down the small dirt road until it intersects with the main road, then I drive through the gap in the roadblock, thanks to you. Men are coming back out of the trees, starting to shout, but I use the van to smash into the rear end of the other truck, denting the body something fierce, but more importantly, sending the truck careening off into the river, preventing pursuit.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Then, about three miles up, I pull off the road into a secluded turnout where we can't be spotted from the main road. I turn to face you. "Okay Evan, time to catch our breath, then we need to find out from our prisoner here if there are any other surprises ahead. And... I don't need to say this, but fuck me Evan, you are something else, you know that?" I steal a brief moment to look you in the eye, admiration and love shining in my gaze.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I can't think of anything to say back, so I just dive in and kiss you. I love you so much that words can't even say it. I can't wait for this to be over so we can love one another in safety. The danger is sexy, but fuck it's tiring.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I kiss you back, and I feel the tension in your muscles as I wrap my hands around you, holding you tight. I realize now that I've lost my taste for a life of constant and unending danger. I realize that part of it was me sticking my finger to life, daring it to do it's worst. But... since I've come to love you, I realize that life is not my enemy, not something to be conquered or mastered, but something to be cherished. The time I have with you is better spent.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I will save David, that's my duty as his friend, but I can't wait to get back to our life together.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: As I finish kissing you, suddenly, the captive breaks down. He was terrified before, but as I look him over, I realize that something more than simple terror is going on. I kneel beside him, you on the other side, as we look down at this young Brazilian mercenary.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: He's handsome, even as he's shaking and sobbing all of a sudden. I look at Evan, a question in my eyes, then down at him. He manages, in Portugese, which I speak just well enough to understand, "Please... sirs... take me.. take me with you... I.. the.. two of you are... together?" he asks.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Suddenly, I begin to understand. I nod, replying, "Yes, this is my boyfriend and my lover, Evan. I am Derek."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: He shakes again, replying, "Here.. I ... have never seen ... it is not... please... I am like you.. take me with you."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Something in my heart melts then, and I understand everything. He is sincere, and I nod slowly, "Of course. What is your name?"

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: He replies, "Mateo. If they knew I was like you... they would kill me, the others."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I answer, "Don't worry Mateo, we won't return to them. But, you have to help us so we can help you. You know why I am here, I am sure. Now, tell me, did your former comrades have any other surprises in store for us?"

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: He gasps, reaching out to grab my hand, holding it tight, gratitude and hope blossoming on his handsome young face, "Yes, I will tell you everything they have planned." He finishes explaining the rest of the trap, and my eyes go wide. What a stroke of luck on multiple counts. Sometimes, an enemy can become your ally. "Evan, if you hadn't spared him, we would have walked right into a fucking hornet's nest. Have I told you how amazing you are?"

11:09 Evan_Riley: I give you a wink. "you have, but I don't get tired of hearing it. So what's the plan, boss? You're sure we can trust his info?"

11:09 Evan_Riley: If the kid is being sincere, I really feel for him. I can't imagine how his life has been up to this point. But if Derek could find his way out, then maybe he can too.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I look down at the captive mercenary. Then, I answer your question, nodding slowly. "Look at him Evan. He's either one of the world's hidden unrecognized star actors trying to earn his life as a mercenary, or he's being sincere. I trust my gut. And, setting a hidden ambush just to get back at me is the kind of thing Black Holdings would do. It feels right."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I think then, "Well, if they want us to come through the front door... I say let's go through the front door." I smile. According to Mateo, the Black Holdings knew where David was hiding for a while now, but they weren't after David. They were after me. They had about a dozen mercenaries covering the entrances to the hideout where David and the survivors were hunkered down.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: "Okay, Evan here's what we're going to do. I'm going to rig this van here on a crude autopilot. Then, we set it moving directly towards the service station next to David's hideout. That's where Mateo said that five of the mercenaries are hiding. Then, when it impacts, we dress like mercenaries ourselves, covering our faces with bandanas, running into the confusion, right into David's hideout. While they are running around like ants whose nest has been stepped on, we get everyone out and into one of the Black Holding's trucks, and high tail it out. You can carry the medical supplies in the backpack, but everything else we brought can be left in the van. What do you think?"

11:09 Evan_Riley: I take in everything you say and nod slowly. It sounds risky but I'd follow you anywhere. I look down at Mateo. We'll have to thank him if this works out.

11:09 Evan_Riley: While you work on the van, I prepare some disguises with guidance from Mateo to make them convincing. I pack the medical supplies and take a moment to admire our handy work.

11:09 Evan_Riley: "I think we're good to go here babe. Just tell us when."

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I nod. "No time like the present. We need to move quick before they realize we've gotten past their roadblock." I dress down, going for the sleazy merc look so popular with the Black Holdings. Dirty wifebeater, battered jeans. Then, I tie a bandana around my face. In the confusion, we should blend right in.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I look you over as you change, taking Mateo's clothes, and leaving the poor kid naked. He doesn't seem to mind though. He seems grateful to be free of his old life. I smile, "That's a hot look for you Evan. Trying to imagine what your fellow VP's would be saying if they could see you now." I kiss you, then drive the Van forward till we are just around the bend from the service station.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I load up the back pack with medical supplies for you, then I tell Mateo, in Portugese, "Hide here behind the tree, if we make it out alive, get ready to jump in the back of the truck with us." He nods, and runs behind the tree.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Then, I make the modifications to the van, locking the steering wheel, and getting ready to wedge down the accelerator. I push the van around the corner, point it at the service station, and wedge the accelerator, then I rush into the woods just out of sight, motioning for you to follow me. We circle around, then there is a load BOOOOOOOOOOMMM.. And a vast shockwave, followed by a sooty cloud of smoke indicates that the Van slammed into the service station as planned.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: There are screams, shouts, running feet. Running full steam ahead, with you right behind me, I burst out of the woods, and head towards the entrance to the underground bunker where David and his men are hiding, noting the nearest truck to make our escape.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: My heart was pounding. This was it.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I leave some street clothes out for Mateo to change into. He really doesn't seem to mind being totally undressed though. I was certainly caught off guard when he stripped down to give me his clothes and revealed he had gone commando today. The kid is definitely scared though. I look over at you and the sleazy thug look definitely works on you. I have to put an incredible amount of effort into not getting hard when you grab me for a kiss.

11:09 Evan_Riley: You and I are on the move. We're swift and stealthy. We move through the facility unbothered. No one is paying attention to two low level grunts when there's explosions outside. I follow your lead and keep a sharp eye on our surroundings. "Do you know where they're being held? Fuck babe in just so ready to be done. I'll do whatever you tell me. Should I make sure we have a clear escape route?

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: As we run in the wake of the chaos, you ask me where they are being held. I answer over my shoulder, as several of the mercs are running towards the service station, "Just head, through that large door leading underground." I point to the door, about 10 metres ahead. "It leads to an underground bunker. Can you go and grab one of those trucks, and drive it over to the entrance of the bunker. I'm hoping that the truck will hide what we are doing, and we can be out of here before they realize we're making the escape with the men." Then, I hand you two grenades. "These are just in case. Pull the pin, throw it and make sure you are no where near it five seconds later. Hoping you won't need it, but you never know! I have to make contact with David, they won't trust anyone they don't know. You can do this Evan! Almost done now." I grin at you, my eyes flashing with confidence and affection, then I pelt towards the bunker door.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I knock on the door in a very particular pattern, two sharp quick knocks followed by three spaced out knocks, followed by two more quick knocks. David will recognize it. It's a signal we used back in the day when I was in command. Sure enough, the peep hole slides open, and David's eyes look into mine, filled with gratitude and fear. He slides the door open, and I enter the bunker. Besides, David, there are seven other men.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: My heart twists to realize this is all that is left of the men I once commanded. All of them are injured in one way or another. David has a broken leg, and is using an improvised crutch. He's a strong, handsome man, confident. It twists me deep inside to see the look of near despair and defeat on his ragged, wan face. The place smells of unwashed men, fear and sickness. I feel enraged at the bastards who ambushed him and left him here to rot. The savage fuckers who did this to my best friend. There is no time for any of that though, and I tell the men to take what weapons they have, be ready to use them if they can, and follow me out the door on my signal. David says only one thing, "Thanks." There are whole depths in those words, a lifetime of friendship communicated in that one phrase.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I keep my eye peeled to the peephole, ready to burst out when you get that truck pulled up.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I hold the two tools of destruction in my hands and return your affectionate smile. I can't help but feel a rush of adrenaline at these new additions to my arsenal. We part ways and I head outside. Things have quieted down now and the enemy is now furiously hunting for the culprits responsible for this attack. I notice they're not all here. Actually, it looks like they've seen the tire tracks left by our van torpedo and they're following them to their origin.

11:09 Evan_Riley: SHIT - Mateo! If they sweep that area, they're going to find him. One look at him and they'll know he's turned on them. There's no time for me to dwell on it. Derek goes with his gut and so will I. My gut says i need to save him. Hang tight Derek. I'm taking a detour.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I sprint through the forest, retracing the steps Derek and I had taken right back to where we left Mateo. We don't have much time. I can hear the Black Holdings thugs nearby. They reached the origin where we sent out van off and soon they'll be sweeping this area.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I call out to Mateo in a harsh whisper. I don't see him at first but a reply eventually comes from above. He saw the thugs getting close and made his way up into the canopy to hide.

11:09 Evan_Riley: "I need you to get down and run in that direction. Then lay low. I'm going to create a distraction." He reaches the ground but his stops when he sees the grenades you gave me. He tells me he has an idea. He wants me to give him one of the grenades. He says he has a good arm and he can throw it far away from us. The explosion will draw them away from us. But I just can't trust him.

11:09 Evan_Riley: He grabs my arm and puts it around his broad shoulders. He says "hold onto me. If I try anything with this grenade then throw me down on top of it." I sigh and hold him in a firm headlock. I allow him just enough range of motion to throw the grenade. He was true to his word. And he wasn't lying about that arm. The muscles flexed beneath the tan, glistening skin and the grenade flew into the distance like it was shot from a cannon. As soon as it was in the air we turn and ran. The explosion shook the trees.

11:09 Evan_Riley: At the edge of the forest, we could see the grounds were mostly empty now. The second explosion proved to be the perfect distraction. We hop into the perfect truck. Mateo has a determined grin on his handsome face as he hits the button the dash the truck comes to life. He notes my confusion and pats my thigh where the key ring with a non-descript black key fob attached connected to my belt (formerly his belt) sits. He tells me it's a special chip that can start most Black Holdings vehicles without a key. I thank the kid profusely as we speed off to pick up you and the men.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I'm waiting patiently at the peephole entrance to the bunker. Then remaining men, with David right at my shoulder are gathered behind me. Suddenly the distinct sound of a grenade going off in the distance reaches my ears. Once again, that familiar, sick twisting fear knots my guts. The fear that something has happened to you, the not knowing if you are all right.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: All my years of combat experience count for nothing in the face of that fear. That, more than anything, reminds me once and for all that I don't want to go back to this life. If anything happened to you.. David could feel the tension rising in me, and squeezed my shoulder suddenly. Not sure why I was so tense, he didn't even know yet about you, but he could always read me like a book.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Then, suddenly, a truck pulled up just outside. Relief shot through me like a cleansing rain. I unbolted the door, shouting, "MOVE MOVE MOVE!" in the same voice I once used to command my mercenaries. Everyone dashes for the back of the truck, and I leap up onto the tailgate, helping the injured men into the back of the truck. David refuses to enter until every single one of his men are safely in the truck.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: I spare a glance at you, smiling with reassurance and pride, catching your eye in the rear view mirror, giving you a quick, proud thumbs up. I almost do a double take when I realize Mateo is the passenger seat next to you, but I know I'll get the story later.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: My hard, sweaty muscle works overtime as I heave and lift, helping each man up into the truck. Suddenly, a bullet zings past my right ear, followed by shouting from the distance. I look back quickly, and see that the Black Holdings thugs are on us. FUCK. But there is only one more man to help up. Another bullet zings, a near miss, but I hold steady, not flinching as I help up the last man, then finally help David up, with his broken leg.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Then, I turn and shout at you, "Evan!! The grenade!! Toss it to me, then let's get the FUCK out of here! Back to the campsite we used the other night!" I catch the grenade as you toss it back, then put the truck in gear. The wounded men all lay flat. As you drive past the burning service station, more shots slam into the truck, but the Black Holdings have put their best vehicles to use here, armoured against bullets, with armoured windows as well.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Aiming carefully, I pull the pin and toss the grenade under the one remaining truck to eliminate any pursuit. The truck explodes in a fireball, the grenade going off right under the fuel tank as we leave the infuriated thugs behind in the dust.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I swell with pride as you praise me. I love the feeling so much. Feeling like your equal.

11:09 Evan_Riley: I wait patiently as you load the men into the back. I try to control myself and not get a fucking hard on. Surrounded by danger, sweat, muscle, power. A young Brazilian jock in the seat next to me. Sweaty t-shirt clinging to his defined body. Then there's David. A beast of a man almost on par with Derek but with his own rugged good looks. I can see the respect and love in the way he looks at you. The love you have for someone who you've been through hell with. Then, of course, there's the man that I love. Muscles glistening and flexing as he helps these men to safety. Whatever dark, twisted past he's had doesn't matter now. The blood on his hands will never fully wash away, but I see the man beyond that. The man working tirelessly to succeed in this mission and tie up that last loose end so he can go home and live the life he deserves with me. We are definitely going to tear each other apart at the next opportunity, in a sexy loving way.

11:09 Evan_Riley: My erotic fantasies are shattered by the sounds of gunshots. I turn to look at you, waiting for instructions. You don't even blink as another shot rings out and barely misses us. You get that last dude to safety. I listen to your instructions and toss you the grenade. I let you handle the demolitions work while I lay on the gas. I catch the big, beautiful explosion in the rear view mirror and a wild grin splits my face as we speed off to salvation.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: We make it back to the campsite, the Black Holdings scattered and out maneuvered. I watch carefully for any sign of pursuit, but we seem to be in the clear.

10:11 AgentDerekSteel: Everyone is too exhausted by the short burst of adrenaline packed action on the ride back to speak. When the truck stops, I get up, looking over the men. Then turn to David, seeing gratitude shining in his eyes. As I lower the tailgate of the truck and start helping the injured men out one by one, David turns to me and says again, "Thanks bro."
