Background:

Our story begins with Matsumoto Ichirou, first born son of the Matsumoto family, the first born after the bombs dropped leading to the capitulation of Japan in the second world war. American interests were dominant in Japan at the time. The country was humiliated; it's warrior pride irreparably wounded but from the ashes of old - the new grew. Ichirou was a strong, sensible young man. He learned English, studied hard, left home to attend Tokyo University. Yet, he never found interest in Japanese girls. Ichirou watched many American movies; he followed global politics more than his own country's politics. He saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and predicted the war between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. Amidst it all however, he worked hard. He became indispensable at his job. This was back in a time where company loyalty was rewarded, when men were salarymen first and husbands second. In time, he was international. His grasp of English and understanding of American culture (albeit through movies and exchange students at university) helped greatly in negotiation and implementation of Toyota's various expansions throughout the western world. Eventually, he ended up on a small Caribbean Island where he met her.

The matriarch of our story, mother of our protagonist, Charolette Didier. She was born in Southern France, had her first taste of wine at the tender age of 10 and while she grew up rather idyllic - there was always a question in the back of her mind about something. Between her father and her father's closest, oldest friend and business partner, she always felt like she had slightly more mannerisms of her father's friend than her own father. Regardless, she grew up happy. She studied politics, she wanted to join a green party- she ended up doing busy work. She wanted to change the world; she ended up going to more meetings than protests. It was a slow and insidious killer. Idealism became compromise; compromise became politics; and politics became a way to keep her quiet. How she ended up being on the ambassador staff to some small third-world Caribbean Country - she didn't even know. No one landmark decision landed her on this island. It was a series of small decisions, small career adjustments and finally- she was trapped in a disgusting city in a homophobic country that was otherwise beautiful with warm, friendly people.

This finally brings us to the union, Colette Ursule Matsumoto - Canadian Born, Caribbean Raised, speaking three languages, English, French and Japanese. She is the daughter of two ex-patriots who fell in love on a beach but first met on a roof-top party for foreign dignitaries held by the ministry of foreign affairs which was across the hall from a dinner for ex-patriots with a finance minister. She attended the Maple Leaf International School for Expatriates of Canada which gave her an Ontario-based education rather than what the local schools offered. She excelled in almost all subjects - specifically the sciences and literature probably some combination of her parents' influence. As she grew older, her parents encouraged her to go to university in France or Japan, she spoke the languages fluently enough but eventually she chose a University in Texas where she enjoyed her time. She studied biochemistry Pre-Med with the intention of becoming either a doctor or a researcher. Neither of those panned out however not because her grades weren't good enough but because she suffered some burnout from such an intense degree. She returned home to the Caribbean but her parents were thinking of moving the whole family to Canada so she actually only spent about a year after college in the place she grew up before being whisked away back to the land of her birth.
